We’re excited to see some early news about a new radio from Ranger and it’s got SSB! It has a small form factor for size (more like a President Lincoln) but with traditional style controls rather than buttons. Since the size is smaller perhaps it’s using a new board design but we won’t know until we get our hands on one.
Some interesting early points about it –
- Dimensions 7-3/8 (W) x 8-3/4 (D) x 2-1/4 (H) Inches – This is about the size of the Emperor TS-5010 on my desk so it would be smaller than a traditional full size radio like the Galaxy 949
- TRANSMITTER AM : 20W RMS AM/SSB : 120W PeP POWER – This is a lot of power in a tiny radio and 100W is more than enough for most people to talk DX on SSB. This is exciting as it’s a high powered small radio.
- Twin Fans Cooling – This is interesting, the radio actually comes with fans on it for cooling. It will be interesting to see how they did this and kept the size small but with a 100W small form factor radio with a limited heat sink you’ll need some cooling so glad to see they included this.
Can you tell I’m excited? We’ve seen a lot of versions of the RCI-2950/70 series and 6900 series over the last couple of years but this seems different so I’m really hoping we’ve got something completely different happening in this new radio.
